A tiny margin is built in to the rates to partially defray the cost of shipping materials and labor to pack and expedite orders to the respective carrier.
Generally the U.S. Postal Service is more economical on smaller items and shipments under seven or eight pounds. UPS is typically more cost effective on larger/heavier shipments.
